Finding Deals on Electronics at Storage Facilities

When most people pass by a self-storage unit, they associate the facility with the storage of extra personal possessions or a safe place to park a SUV or RV that doesn't get used often, And yes, Toronto self storage units provide affordable and accessible ways to pack away seasonal items or store unused furniture or family heirlooms while in the midst of downsizing your home or even that first computer you purchased and have been keeping for sentimental reasons.
However, very few consider some of other more alternative benefits that a storage facility can offer such as cheap electronics.
Business owners have long used secured storage units to store additional merchandise that wouldn't fit on their showroom floor or in their backroom. Unfortunately in this economic climate, many businesses are failing, and when they do, they often abandon the merchandise in their storage unit and cease paying the storage facility. When they stop paying, the storage facility reclaims the unit and all the items left in it, and to your benefit, turn around and sell it for cheap prices.
Storage unit facilities aren't concerned with making the greatest amount of profit off the items they reclaim, they are more concerned with getting it off their property so they can continue to make money at what they do best providing storage. For a couple of dollars, you can easily find:
- Computers
- iPods
- Laptops
- Flat Screen TVs
- Stereo Systems
Most of these items are up-to-date, and those that aren't can easily be used for parts. Regardless, you will be able to find electronics at prices that you would never see at a retailer, on eBay, or on CraigsList.
Finding these storage unit auctions is relatively easy too. Many facilities will post their upcoming auctions in the paper or you can sign up for their mailing list to be kept in the loop. Some companies may even post photos or list items on their website if they are wanting to draw larger crowds.
Before bidding on anything at an auction, you should be sure to know your electronics. Most storage facilities auction items off in a lot meaning a palate of items all sold together. Some of these items could be great finds while others should simply be tossed in the trash. However, if you know your electronics well and can simply scan lots and realize makes, models, and years, you will be sure to find a few awesome desktop or laptop computers at great prices.
